The first LEERDAMMER® cheese was crafted in 1974, but its story began earlier in the decade. It all started when Cees Boterkooper, a Dutch businessman who owned a small dairy in Leerdam, and Baastian Baars, who ran a nearby cheese factory in 1970, first met. Looking to expand the variety of Dutch cheeses, they created a new product that blended the mild flavor of Gouda with the distinctive holes of Swiss. This collaboration eventually led to what is now Président® LEERDAMMER cheese, named after the city of Leerdam.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Président® LEERDAMMER is coming to the USA. We are excited to share this cheese and its unique flavor with cheese lovers across the country!
